1. Introduction to Computers and Engineering Problem Solving This course covers the fundamentals of object-oriented software design and development, focusing on computational methods and sensing for engineering, as well as scientific and managerial applications. Key topics include class design, inheritance, graphical user interfaces, numerical methods, streams, threads, sensors, and data structures. Throughout the course, students will complete weekly software assignments using the Java® programming language, applying these concepts in practical scenarios to build their coding and problem-solving skills. 2. Uncertainty in Engineering This course offers an introduction to probability and statistics, with a focus on engineering applications. Topics include events and their probabilities, total probability and Bayes’ theorems, discrete and continuous random variables and vectors, as well as uncertainty propagation and conditional analysis. Students will explore the second-moment representation of uncertainty, random sampling, and methods for estimating distribution parameters, including the method of moments, maximum likelihood, and Bayesian estimation. The course also covers simple and multiple linear regression, with concepts illustrated through examples from both engineering and everyday life. 3. Computing and Data Analysis for Environmental Applications This course is a computer-oriented introduction to probability and data analysis, designed to equip students with the knowledge and practical experience needed to interpret lab and field data. Basic probability concepts are introduced early on, providing a systematic approach to describing uncertainty, which is essential for analyzing quantitative data in science and engineering. The MATLAB® programming language is utilized to conduct virtual experiments and analyze real-world data sets, often sourced from the web. Programming applications include data display, hypothesis testing, and identifying causal relationships between variables. Notably, this is the first semester that two courses, Computing and Data Analysis for Environmental Applications (1.017) and Uncertainty in Engineering (1.010), are being combined and taught as a single course & More Courses deatils…………………. |
